President’s Message
December 2010

I would like to thank all those members that voted for me to serve for the next year as president of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of APWA. As many of you know, our Chapter was the first Chapter of APWA with the Chicago Metro and Louisiana Chapters following soon thereafter and all three Chapters recently celebrated our 75th anniversaries. With your help and support we can ensure our Chapter and our National organization can thrive for another 75 years.

Until a few years ago, we were known as the Delaware Valley Chapter, but due to our past successes, we were able to help our members in South Jersey join with their neighbors to the north to create the New Jersey Chapter. A few years later, our members from Delaware formed their own Chapter, as well. While these two milestones strengthened our neighbors, it created a significant loss in our membership. Today our chapter has approximately 140 members. This makes us one of the smallest Chapters in APWA. However, we are also one of the smallest in area (Philadelphia and the four surrounding Counties). Our membership numbers in a small area put us on par with some Chapters that cover an entire state, and although our membership numbers are small, we actually have more members than five or six Chapters of those Chapters! Because our membership-to-area density is quit large, we can accomplish just as much if not more than Chapters that cover a larger area with a larger pool of members. Our advantage is our compact size. We need to take advantage of this fact and use it to get our members (new and existing) involved.

As the economy continues to sputter along and everyone’s budgets continue to be “tightened,” my primary goal over the next year is to hold at least six programs that will help educate you and your staff. For our members who are professionals, our sessions will typically award professional development hours (PDH’s) or continuing education units (CEU’s) that will be acceptable for the continuing education requirement for engineers licensed in Pennsylvania.

In order to accomplish this goal, the Chapter’s Board and I need the help of our members. We need you to participate and contribute to your Chapter. We are here to help you get the most out of APWA. However, we cannot do it alone. Please contact me if you wish to participate in any activities. I would also like to hear from you if there is a program or topic that you want us to sponsor or promote.

Don’t be surprised if you hear from one of the Board members or me next time we have a program scheduled. I look forward to seeing you very, very soon and wish all our members and their families, a very Happy Holiday Season and a prosperous New Year.

Dan
